Since 13 July 2026 an Alberta online casino can be legal in two ways: Play Alberta, the government site run by AGLC, or a private operator registered by AGLC that also holds a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation. The minimum age is 18+, and you have to be physically in Alberta to play. Any other site taking bets from Albertans is offshore and outside provincial rules.
From one government site to a regulated private market
Until the summer of 2026, Play Alberta was the only legal place to gamble online in the province. Bill 48, the iGaming Alberta Act, passed in May 2025 and received Royal Assent on 15 May 2025, according to legal and trade reports. It created the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) to oversee the online market, while AGLC (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis) stays the regulator. The provincial government estimated that unregulated operators held about 70% of Alberta’s online gambling market before launch, which is the share the new system is meant to bring under provincial rules.
The design follows Ontario’s. Registration with AGLC alone does not authorise gaming: an operator also needs the commercial agreement with AiGC. AGLC let operators that were not yet registered ask for a transition period, decided case by case and ending no later than 13 October 2026. After that, a site without both pieces sits outside the regulated market. We do not quote a total number of live operators, because we could not confirm one from AGLC; check each brand on its own.
Play Alberta: the crown option that stays
Play Alberta continues next to the private brands. According to AGLC, it offers casino-style games including slots and virtual tables, live dealer games, instant games, lottery tickets and sports betting with single-event wagers. Registering requires you to be 18 or older, physically in Alberta and to pass identity verification. Revenue goes to the province rather than to a private company, and AGLC sets its player protection rules directly.

Registered private casinos in Alberta compared
The brands below are recorded in our operator data as registered in Alberta as well as in Ontario. Several run separate sites for each province, so open the address tied to the Alberta registration. Scores are our own and weigh licence, payments, bonus fairness, product and player protection, as set out on the how we rate page.

AGLC publishes its registrants on a public gaming registrants page, where the class “iGaming – Operator” marks online operators. BET99 appears there, and so does Apollo Entertainment with brand names such as Captain Cooks Casino, Golden Tiger, Luxury Casino and Yukon Gold Casino. Welcome offers change often and we do not reprint them; read the full terms on the operator’s own site before you opt in.
Alberta slots, poker and bingo online
Searches for Alberta slots or online slots in Alberta lead to the same studio-made games you see elsewhere in Canada. The return to player, volatility and features are set by each studio, so read the game’s information screen rather than a casino’s summary. Our online casino rankings compare lobbies by more than game count. Online poker is less settled: we have not confirmed a shared Alberta poker pool or a Play Alberta poker room, and online bingo on Play Alberta is not confirmed either, so check each lobby before you deposit.
The rules are the same across the province. An online casino in Calgary or one marketed to Edmonton players is still either Play Alberta, an AGLC-registered operator with an AiGC agreement, or an offshore site; there is no city-level licence for online gambling. Alberta betting sites follow the same split, and single-event sports bets are part of both Play Alberta and the private sportsbooks.
Offshore sites after the launch
For years several international brands accepted Albertans under Kahnawake, Malta or Curacao permits. Those that did not register with AGLC and sign with AiGC remain offshore. AGLC rules, its complaint process and provincial self-exclusion do not reach them, and a disputed withdrawal has no Alberta regulator to turn to. Whether playing there exposes the player to any legal risk has not been settled by a court, so we stick to the facts and the protection gap. The guide to the Kahnawake Gaming Commission explains what that licence covers.
Lottery tickets in Alberta
Draw tickets in Alberta are sold under the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, which also serves Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the three territories. Besides the national Lotto Max, Lotto 6/49 and Daily Grand, the region has its own game, Western Max, available only in the Prairie provinces and the northern territories; see the Western Max page. The regional add-on is EXTRA rather than Ontario’s ENCORE, and WCLC policy refuses to sell or cash tickets for anyone under 18. Play Alberta also sells lottery online.
Help lines and support in Alberta
The Addiction Helpline, 1-866-332-2322, is free, answers 24 hours a day and covers gambling as well as alcohol and drugs. Play Alberta lists the same line. Whichever regulated site you use, look for its deposit limit and time-out settings and set them before you play rather than after a losing run. Our responsible gambling page lists the warning signs and the tools available at regulated sites.
Questions readers ask
- Is online gambling legal in Alberta?
Yes, on Play Alberta and on private sites registered by AGLC that hold a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation. The private market opened on 13 July 2026.
- What is the gambling age in Alberta?
18. The Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act treats anyone under 18 as a minor, and Play Alberta requires players to be 18 or older and physically in Alberta.
- Is Play Alberta closing now that private casinos are allowed?
No. Play Alberta continues under AGLC alongside the private operators, so Albertans now have both a government site and registered private brands.
- How can I tell if an Alberta gambling site is registered?
Search the operator on AGLC's gaming registrants page under the class iGaming - Operator. Registration on its own is not enough, so the site should also say it operates in partnership with the Alberta iGaming Corporation.
- Do the rules differ for players in Calgary or Edmonton?
No. Online gambling is regulated at the provincial level, so the same list of legal sites and the same 18+ age apply everywhere in Alberta.
