About us

Privacy Policy

What personal information we collect, why we collect it and your rights under PIPEDA and Quebec's Law 25.

Privacy Policy

We collect as little personal information as we can: the technical data any website receives when you visit, any email you choose to send us, and records of clicks on operator buttons. We do not sell personal information, we do not ask for account or payment details, and we handle what we hold under Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for readers in Quebec, the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector as amended by Law 25.

What we collect and why

  • Server logs. Your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. We use them to keep the site running, secure and free of abuse.
  • Messages. If you write to us through the contact page, we keep your email address and message to reply and to track corrections.
  • Operator button clicks. When you use a button that leads to an operator, our redirect records the click so we can maintain links and, where an affiliate arrangement exists, receive commission. See our affiliate disclosure.
  • Cookies. Cookies needed for the site to work are always set. Any analytics or affiliate cookies are used only as described in the cookie notice shown on the site, and you can refuse non-essential cookies.

Consent and purpose

We use personal information only for the purposes listed above, or with your consent for another purpose. You can withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal or contractual limits, by writing to us. We do not use your information to build gambling profiles or to target you with offers.

Your rights under PIPEDA and Law 25

You may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, and ask how it has been used or disclosed. Under Quebec’s Law 25, residents of Quebec may also ask for information about decisions made solely by automated processing, ask us to stop disseminating their information, and request a copy of computerized personal information in a structured, commonly used format. We do not make automated decisions about readers.

Send requests through the contact page. We will respond within 30 days, as both laws require in most cases, and may ask you to confirm your identity. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Quebec, to the Commission d’acces a l’information.

Person in charge, retention and transfers

The editor in charge of the site is responsible for the protection of personal information and can be reached through the contact page. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security, and messages are kept as long as needed to deal with the matter and any correction. Our hosting or service providers may process data outside your province or outside Canada; when they do, we require protection comparable to what Canadian law expects. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected people and the relevant commissioner.

Changes

We will update this page when our practices change and show the new date at the top.
