Most casino bonuses in Canada are worth less than their headline suggests, because the value of an online casino bonus sits in its wagering requirement, win cap and expiry date. A bonus is extra play money or a batch of spins added to your account, usually after a deposit, and you must bet a set amount before any winnings can be withdrawn.
The first question about any deposit bonus is who is offering it. Ontario-registered sites may show offers only on their own site and to players who have opted in. Most bonus advertising you meet in public therefore comes from offshore casinos that no province licenses.
What a casino bonus buys you, and what it does not
Treat a bonus as borrowed playing time with conditions attached. A deposit match adds a percentage of what you pay in, up to a limit, and locks the bonus (sometimes your deposit too) until you have bet a multiple of it. A sign-up offer may be a set number of spins on named slots. Cashback returns part of your net losses over a period. None of these change the house edge of the games you play with the money.
Five terms decide what an offer is worth, and our editors read all of them before describing one:
- Wagering requirement: how many times the bonus, or bonus plus deposit, must be bet before you can withdraw.
- Game weighting: the share of each bet that counts toward wagering. Slots usually count in full; blackjack, roulette and live tables often count for a fraction or nothing.
- Maximum bet: the largest stake allowed while bonus money is active. Breaking it can void winnings.
- Win cap: a ceiling on what you can cash out from bonus play, common on no-deposit offers.
- Expiry: the days you have to claim the offer, use spins and finish wagering.
Ontario’s ban on public bonus advertising
Standard 2.05 of the AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming prohibits advertising and marketing that communicate gambling inducements, bonuses and credits, except on the operator’s own gaming site and in direct marketing to players who have actively consented. Consent must be given on that operator’s site; agreement collected on a third-party site does not count. The standard names the display of promotional codes as a form of indirect advertising. Standard 2.06 adds that an offer must show its material conditions when first presented and may not be called free unless it really is free.
The rule is enforced. The AGCO fined Unibet $48,000 for advertising and inducement infractions, and trade press reported penalties of $110,000 for BetMGM Canada, partly over affiliate marketing, and $100,000 for DraftKings Canada for breaching Standard 2.05. In practice, a public page promising a large Ontario welcome offer with a code is out of date, aimed at another province or not from a registered operator. Our own policy follows from this: we do not print bonus amounts or codes for Ontario-registered brands. Where our database holds a value, it appears in a neutral data field, and the current terms are the ones you see on the operator’s site after you log in. Our guide to iGaming Ontario explains how the regulated market is set up.
Casino bonus wagering in one worked example
Here is our own arithmetic, not any operator’s terms. A $100 bonus with a 35x requirement means $3,500 of bets before withdrawal. On a slot that pays back 96% over the long run, the expected loss on $3,500 of play is about 4%, or $140. That is more than the bonus. Short sessions can land well above or below the average, but the sum explains why high wagering usually makes a bonus a cost rather than a gift.
No AGCO standard sets a number for wagering, and we have found no Canadian cap. For comparison, the UK Gambling Commission limited wagering to 10x from 19 January 2026, after some UK licensees had used up to 60x. Offshore terms we have read sit far above that:
| Casino (offshore) | Licence stated by the operator | Wagering in its terms |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Hotel Casino | Kahnawake Gaming Commission (licence 00972; licence holder Fresh Horizons Limited) | 200x on first and second deposit bonuses; 30x from the third deposit; slots count 100%, most other games 2% |
| Club Player Casino | Anjouan (Computer Gaming Licensing Act 007 of 2005; licence holder Primrose Media Limited) | 40x for slots, keno, bingo, scratch cards and similar; 60x for table games and video poker (no-deposit, cashback and most bonuses) |
| Decode Casino | None stated on the official site | 30x deposit plus bonus for deposit coupons; 60x bonus for no-deposit coupons (terms) |
None of these three is licensed by a province, so provincial rules and complaint routes do not cover them.
Regulated casinos with bonus terms you can check
The regulated options are the crown sites (OLG in Ontario, PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Loto-Quebec’s online casino, Atlantic Lottery, PlayAlberta) and the private casinos registered in Ontario and, since 13 July 2026, in Alberta. Their promotions, where they exist, sit behind the login and come with terms you can raise with the operator and, in Ontario, with the AGCO’s standards behind them. The table below shows licence, provinces and Interac status; offer details are on each brand’s own site.

Bonus types covered in this section
Each page below explains one family of offers, with the maths and the Canadian legal position:
- Welcome bonuses: deposit matches and multi-deposit packages for new accounts.
- No deposit bonuses: free chips and small credits, almost all from offshore sites, usually with win caps.
- Free spins: deposit spins, no-deposit spins and no-wagering spins on named slots.
- Promo codes and cashback offers, listed with the other child pages below.
- Casino Cashback BonusesCashback returns a slice of net losses, but how it is counted and whether it comes as cash or bonus money decide its worth.
- Casino Promo CodesOntario treats a displayed promo code as advertising. Here is what that means for code searches, and how to judge a code's terms.
- Casino Welcome BonusesDeposit matches, multi-deposit packages and sign-up spins: how to read a welcome offer and what Ontario allows operators to show you.
- Free Spins BonusesPromotional spins, in-game free spin rounds and spin wheels are three different things. How each works and what the terms change.
- No Deposit BonusesFree chips and sign-up credits without paying in: who offers them to Canadians, the caps that come with them, and the licence questions to ask.
Playing with no bonus at all
Some people search for an online casino with no bonus, and it is a sensible choice. Money you deposit without an offer attached is normally yours to withdraw at any time, with no wagering, no maximum bet and no win cap. Most terms let you decline a welcome offer at the deposit step or ask support to remove it before you play; check this before you deposit, because some offers are added automatically.
Bingo bonuses and loyalty schemes
Bonus bingo offers work the same way as casino ones: tickets or credits with wagering, and often a cap. Loyalty programmes turn play into points that convert to bonus money, again with terms. Grand Hotel Casino, a Kahnawake-licensed offshore site, links a programme called Casino Rewards in its footer. A points scheme like that follows its own rules, and points earned offshore carry the same protection gap as the site itself.
Six checks before you opt in
- Confirm the site is licensed for your province, or accept that it is offshore.
- Find the wagering multiple and whether it applies to the bonus or to bonus plus deposit.
- Check which games count and at what weighting.
- Note the maximum bet and the win cap.
- Write down the expiry dates.
- Set a deposit limit first. Online gambling is 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec), and our responsible gambling page lists provincial support lines.
Questions readers ask
- Which casino bonus is best in Canada?
The one with the lowest wagering, no win cap, fair game weighting and enough time to finish. Headline size matters far less than those four terms, and a regulated site's smaller offer is often worth more than a large offshore one.
- Why do Ontario casinos not show bonuses on their home pages?
AGCO Standard 2.05 bars public advertising of inducements, bonuses and credits. Registered operators may present them only on their own site and to players who have opted in to direct marketing.
- Can I withdraw a deposit bonus straight away?
No. Bonus money stays locked until the wagering requirement is met. Your own deposit is usually withdrawable if you have not accepted an offer, so read the terms before you opt in.
- Are bonus winnings taxed in Canada?
For most recreational players, winnings are not taxed in Canada (this is not tax advice). Our guide to gambling winnings and tax covers the exceptions, such as people who gamble as a business.
- Is a big no deposit bonus a sign of a good casino?
No. Large no deposit offers come mostly from offshore sites and usually carry high wagering and a low win cap. Check the licence and the terms first.
