"Offshore access" means the site accepts players there without a provincial licence: provincial rules and complaint routes do not cover it.

Alberta’s own online gambling site, Play Alberta, is operated by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), the provincial regulator, which makes it a legitimate, government-run option for adults in the province. According to AGLC, it carries casino-style games, live dealer tables, instant games, lottery and a sportsbook with single-event wagering. You must be 18 or older and physically in Alberta to play. Since 13 July 2026 it has competition: private operators registered with AGLC now offer games in the province too.

This Play Alberta review explains what the site offers, how its protections work, what we could not confirm and how it compares with the new private market. For the province’s wider rules, see our Alberta gambling guide.

Is Play Alberta legit? Who runs it

Yes. Play Alberta appears on AGLC’s own register of gaming registrants in the class “iGaming – Operator”, listed as the government site rather than a private company. The owner and the regulator sit inside the same provincial structure: Government of Alberta (AGLC).

That model is what Canadian law expected for decades. Under section 207 of the Criminal Code, only a province, or a body acting for it, may conduct and manage lottery schemes, which includes online casino games and sports betting. Play Alberta is the direct form of that rule. The new private operators reach Alberta players through a different route: they register with AGLC and sign a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, created by the iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48, 2025).

One practical point for anyone asking whether Play Alberta is legit: the name is easy to copy. Any app or site using it should name AGLC as the operator or publisher. A look-alike app, or a social media ad promising unusually large bonuses, is a reason to stop and check before you sign up.

Play Alberta casino games and slots

According to AGLC, the Play Alberta casino covers slots, virtual table games such as blackjack and roulette, live dealer table games and instants (scratch-style games). AGLC’s pages do not list the game studios, and the Play Alberta site refused our research requests, so we do not name suppliers or count titles here.

What we can say is how to judge the slots on any regulated site. Each game should show its rules and paytable inside the game window, and the return to player (RTP) figure, where a studio publishes it, describes the long-run average across millions of spins, not your session. Studios publish RTP, volatility and features on their own pages. No betting method changes the house edge.

People asking about the “best slots on Play Alberta” usually want popular titles. Popularity changes week to week and we have no reliable data on what Albertans play most, so we suggest choosing by published RTP and volatility rather than by a ranking.

Sports betting and lottery on the same account

Play Alberta’s sportsbook includes single-event wagering, legal in Canada since Bill C-218 came into force on 27 August 2021. Before that, provincial sports products sold multi-event tickets. We have not confirmed the full list of leagues. Markets and odds are set by the site and change constantly, so we do not quote them either. Our sports section covers how odds and limits work.

Lottery is the other half of the site. AGLC lists lottery among the products; in Alberta, draw games such as Lotto Max are run by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, and we have not confirmed which of them can be bought on Play Alberta at any given time. One account covers casino, sportsbook and lottery, which makes it easier to see total spending in one place.

Play Alberta bonus, promo code and free spins

Play Alberta’s offers, when it runs them, are posted on its own promotions page. We could not confirm a current offer from an official source, so the field below may be empty: not stated. Any code the site uses appears on that page as well: not stated. We do not invent codes.

Searches for a “Play Alberta promo code” and “Play Alberta free spins” are common, which is why we wrote separate pages on the Play Alberta promo code and on no deposit bonuses and free spins. The short version: read the terms for wagering, eligible games, expiry and maximum winnings before opting in. The current wagering condition, where published: not stated.

Opening an account and moving money

To open an account you register with your personal details, confirm you are 18 or older and pass identity verification; AGLC states that players must be physically in Alberta to play, so the site checks your location. Location checks are a legal requirement, not a technical glitch, and we do not give advice on getting around them.

Payment methods and payout times are set by the operator and may change. The details we hold, which may be blank until confirmed from an official page:

Item Current value
Minimum deposit not stated
Payment methods not stated
Interac not stated
Withdrawal time not stated

For a Play Alberta withdrawal, expect the usual regulated-site rules: winnings usually go back to a verified method in your name, and the first cash-out can take longer while documents are checked. We have not confirmed whether Interac e-Transfer is among the methods.

Limits, self-exclusion and player protection

Player protection is where a government site should be strongest, because the operator answers directly to the provincial regulator. We could not open Play Alberta’s own help pages, so we do not list its limit tools by name. Before your first deposit, look in the account settings for deposit, loss and time limits and for a self-exclusion option, and use the ones that fit how you want to play.

The complaint route is simple to describe: you first raise a problem with Play Alberta’s customer support, and because AGLC both regulates gambling in the province and operates the site, the provincial regulator is the next step. With an offshore site, by contrast, the only outside route is the foreign licensing body.

Gambling is for adults only: 19+ in most provinces (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). In Alberta, the Addiction Helpline at 1-866-332-2322 is free and open 24/7 and covers gambling. Our responsible gambling page lists tools and support across Canada.

Play Alberta app

We could not confirm the current Play Alberta listings in the Apple App Store and Google Play from an official source, so we do not describe the app’s features or ratings. If you install an app under that name, check that the publisher is AGLC; our Play Alberta app page has the checks. The listing status we hold: Android not stated, iOS not stated.

Play Alberta versus the private Alberta market

Until July 2026, Play Alberta was the only regulated online gambling site in the province, and AGLC estimated that unregulated operators held about 70% of the market. The iGaming Alberta Act changed that. Private brands now need AGLC registration plus an agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, and several well-known names appear on AGLC’s register.

For you, the difference is mostly about product and promotions. Private operators often advertise welcome packages and large game libraries. Play Alberta offers provincial ownership and, according to AGLC’s product list, lottery, casino and sports in one place. Both routes are regulated in Alberta. The offshore sites that still advertise to Albertans are neither. Some of the registered names:

Gaps in our Play Alberta research

The Play Alberta site returned an access error to our research tools, so several details come from AGLC rather than from the site: we have not confirmed the current payment list, payout times, game studios, number of games, limit tools, app listings or the current promotions. Where the operator publishes those, the values above fill in. We have not opened an account or made deposits; this review relies on AGLC publications and the AGLC register.

Is Play Alberta a real government site?

Yes. It is operated by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) and appears on AGLC's own register of iGaming operators as the government site rather than a private company.

Can I use Play Alberta outside Alberta?

No. AGLC states that you must be physically located in Alberta to play. You can travel with an account, but wagers are only accepted inside the province.

What is the minimum age for Play Alberta?

18. Alberta's Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act sets the minimum age at 18 for online gambling, and registration includes an identity and age check.

Yes. AGLC lists a sports betting product that includes single-event wagering, alongside casino games, live dealer, instants and lottery on the same account.

How do I set a deposit limit on Play Alberta?

Look in your account settings before your first deposit. We could not open Play Alberta's help pages to confirm the exact tools, so check what the site lists for deposit, loss and time limits and for self-exclusion.
