Responsible Gambling: Limits, Self-Exclusion and Help Lines

Practical responsible gambling: the tools regulated sites offer, the warning signs to watch for, and free help lines for every province and territory.

Responsible Gambling: Limits, Self-Exclusion and Help Lines

Responsible gambling means treating betting as paid entertainment with a fixed budget, never as a way to make money or recover losses, and using the limits and breaks that regulated sites offer. If gambling is causing you or someone close to you harm, free and confidential help is available in every province and territory; the numbers are listed below. Online gambling in Canada is for adults only: 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

Responsible gaming in practice

Examples of responsible gaming habits are simple and they work best when decided before you play:

  • Set a budget you can afford to lose and a time limit for each session.
  • Use deposit and loss limits in your account settings; on regulated sites they are part of the standard tools.
  • Never chase losses or borrow to gamble.
  • Take breaks with a time-out or cool-off option.
  • Keep gambling separate from stress, alcohol and money worries.

Self-exclusion programs

Self-exclusion lets you block yourself from gambling for a set period. In Ontario, iGaming Ontario points players to BetGuard, a centralized program that covers all regulated online gambling in the province, as well as each operator’s own tools. In British Columbia, Game Break covers PlayNow.com and BCLC’s lottery app. Other crown sites offer self-exclusion in the account settings. Offshore sites are not covered by provincial programs; our Kahnawake guide explains why.

Warning signs

Spending more than you planned, hiding gambling from people close to you, gambling to win back losses, or feeling anxious when you cannot play are all signs to stop and talk to someone. You do not need to be in crisis to call a help line.

A note on the Responsible Gambling Council and other groups

Many readers look up the Responsible Gambling Council and similar non-profit groups that run awareness campaigns, including responsible gaming education month events. We have not verified their contact details for this page, so the table above lists only provincial services confirmed with official sources. Your province’s page, such as our Ontario guide, has more on local support.

Our part

We publish verdicts, not encouragement to play. Every money page on this site carries the age line and a link back here, and we never describe gambling as a source of income. Our rating method gives player protection tools 20 of 100 points.

Questions readers ask

What does responsible gambling mean?

Gambling within a budget and time limit you set in advance, for entertainment only, using the limits and breaks that regulated sites provide, and stopping when it stops being fun.

How do I self-exclude from all Ontario gambling sites?

iGaming Ontario points players to BetGuard, a centralized self-exclusion program covering all regulated online gambling in Ontario. Each operator also offers its own self-exclusion.

Are gambling help lines free?

Yes. The provincial and territorial services listed on this page are free to call, and most describe their service as confidential.

Do offshore casinos follow provincial self-exclusion?

No. Provincial programs cover crown sites and provincially licensed operators only. Offshore sites run their own tools, if any.
