Online Roulette in Canada

The roulette wheel, the bets on the table and the house edge on each, plus where Canadians can play online roulette legally and how free roulette works.

Online Roulette in Canada

The wheel decides what online roulette costs you. A single-zero (European) wheel gives the house an edge of 2.70%, while a double-zero (American) wheel nearly doubles it to 5.26%. In Canada you can play online roulette legally on your provincial crown site and, in Ontario and Alberta, on private casinos registered with the regulator. Bet types, live dealer streams and side features all sit on top of that one number.

How the roulette wheel and table work

A roulette wheel has numbered pockets from 1 to 36, alternating red and black, plus one green zero on a European wheel or two green pockets (0 and 00) on an American wheel. The dealer, or the software in an RNG game, spins the wheel and drops a ball; the pocket where it stops decides every bet on the table. The roulette table layout mirrors the wheel: you place chips on single numbers, groups of numbers or on the outside bets such as red or black, odd or even, and high or low.

Payouts are the same on both wheels. A straight-up bet on one number pays 35 to 1, a split pays 17 to 1, a dozen or column pays 2 to 1 and the even-money bets pay 1 to 1. The house edge comes from the green pockets: they are on the wheel but not covered by the even-money payouts, so the true odds are always slightly worse than what the table pays.

Roulette house edge by wheel and bet

The figures below come from the Wizard of Odds roulette reference. They describe the long-run cost of each bet, not what will happen in one session.

Game or bet House edge
European roulette (single zero), any standard bet 2.70%
American roulette (0 and 00), most bets 5.26%
American five-number bet (0-00-1-2-3) 7.89%
French roulette with la partage, even-money bets 1.35%
French roulette with en prison, even-money bets about 1.37-1.39%

La partage and en prison are French rules that return half of an even-money bet, or hold it for the next spin, when the ball lands on zero. If a site offers French roulette with either rule and you play red or black, the cost of play is roughly half that of the European game. In practice, the first thing to check at any online roulette lobby is which wheel you are looking at.

Betting systems do not change the odds

Martingale, Fibonacci, D’Alembert and similar systems change the size of your bets, not the odds of each spin. Every spin of a fair wheel is independent, so a run of reds tells you nothing about the next result, and the house edge applies to every chip you place. Doubling after losses also runs into table limits and your own bankroll long before it recovers a bad streak. The honest way to make a roulette budget last is to choose a single-zero wheel, keep bets small relative to your bankroll and decide in advance when to stop.

Live dealer roulette and RNG roulette

Online roulette comes in two forms. RNG roulette uses a random number generator and an animated wheel, so spins are fast and minimum bets are usually low. Live dealer roulette streams a real wheel from a studio, with a human croupier and a betting window between spins; it is slower and minimums tend to be higher. Variants with random multipliers, such as Lightning Roulette, pay boosted amounts on some numbers; their payout table differs from the classic game, so read it before you play. Our live casino guide covers which regulated sites stream roulette tables and what the studios publish about them.

Where to play roulette online in Canada

Your options depend on the province you are in when you play. In Ontario, OLG.ca and the private casinos listed by iGaming Ontario offer RNG and live roulette to players aged 19+ who are physically in the province. Alberta has Play Alberta plus a private market that opened on 13 July 2026. In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, PlayNow is the authorized site; Quebec has Loto-Quebec’s online casino, and Atlantic Lottery covers the Atlantic provinces. Our province-by-province guide lists the authorized sites where you live.

Offshore sites licensed in places such as Kahnawake, Curacao or Anjouan also offer roulette to Canadians. They are not licensed by any province, so provincial dispute routes and self-exclusion programs do not cover them.

Free roulette and roulette simulators

Free roulette games, roulette sims and the “247 roulette” style sites let you spin a virtual wheel with play chips. They are useful for learning the table layout and seeing how quickly even-money bets swing, but they cannot show you anything about future spins, and play chips have no cash value. A free roulette wheel game also tends to use generous default chip stacks, which can make real-money losses feel abstract; if you move to real play, set your stake in dollars first and stick to it.

Setting a roulette budget

Roulette rounds are short, and live tables run continuously, so time and money can slip away. Set a deposit limit in your account, keep a session timer, and do not raise stakes to win back losses. Online casino games in Canada are for adults only: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Our responsible gambling page has the free helpline for each province and explains how self-exclusion works.

Questions readers ask

Which roulette wheel has the best odds?

A single-zero wheel. European roulette carries a 2.70% house edge; American roulette with 0 and 00 carries 5.26%. French roulette with la partage or en prison cuts the edge on even-money bets to about 1.35%.

Is online roulette rigged?

Private sites in Ontario and Alberta operate under the provincial regulator's standards, and crown sites are run by provincial corporations. The house edge is built into the payouts, not into hidden manipulation. Offshore sites are not checked by any province.

Can a betting system beat roulette?

No. Systems such as Martingale change bet sizes, not the odds. Each spin is independent and the house edge applies to every bet.

Is free roulette the same as the real game?

The rules and payouts are the same, but free roulette uses play chips that cannot be cashed out. It is a learning tool, not a preview of real-money results.
