Online Blackjack in Canada

How blackjack is played, why the rules on the table change the house edge, what basic strategy does, and where Canadians can play online blackjack legally.

Online Blackjack in Canada

Played with basic strategy, blackjack has one of the lowest house edges in the casino: about 0.28% under liberal rules and 0.43% under stricter ones, according to the Wizard of Odds. That figure depends on the table rules and on you making the right decision on every hand. Online blackjack is legal in Canada on your provincial crown site and, in Ontario and Alberta, on private casinos registered with the regulator.

How to play blackjack: the rules of 21

The black jack card game pits you against the dealer, not against other players. You and the dealer each get two cards; number cards count at face value, picture cards count 10 and an ace counts 1 or 11. The goal is a total closer to 21 than the dealer’s without going over. A blackjack (an ace plus a ten-value card on your first two cards) beats any other 21.

On your turn you can hit (take a card), stand, double down (double your bet for exactly one more card) or split a pair into two hands. Some tables also offer surrender, giving up half your bet before you play the hand. Once every player has finished, the dealer plays by fixed rules printed on the table, usually drawing to 16 and standing on 17. The dealer has no choices to make, which is why the maths of blackjack can be worked out so precisely.

Blackjack house edge and table rules

Small rule changes move the house edge more than most players expect. When you read the rules panel at an online blackjack table, these are the lines to look for.

Rule Effect for the player
Blackjack pays 3 to 2 Standard; a 6 to 5 payout costs you far more
Dealer stands on soft 17 Better than a dealer who hits soft 17
Double after split allowed Better for the player
Late surrender offered Better for the player
Fewer decks Generally better for the player

The 0.28% and 0.43% figures above assume the full basic strategy and a 3 to 2 payout for blackjack. A table paying 6 to 5 for a natural, or one where the dealer hits soft 17, pushes the cost up. If the rules are not shown before you sit down, open the game’s help screen.

Basic strategy, card counting and myths

Basic strategy is a chart that gives the statistically best move for every combination of your hand and the dealer’s up card, for example always splitting aces and eights and never taking insurance. It is not a trick to win; it simply keeps the house edge at its published minimum. Card counting tracks which cards have left the shoe, but online RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand and live tables may use continuous shufflers or cut deep into the shoe, so counting has little or no value online. Progressive betting systems do not change the odds of any hand.

Blackjack side bets

Many tables add side bets such as Perfect Pairs or 21+3, which pay on your first cards forming a pair or a poker-style hand. They pay large multiples, and that is the catch: the house edge on side bets is far higher than on the main game. If you want the low edge that makes blackjack attractive, skip them or keep them to a small, fixed share of your budget. The game’s paytable lists every side-bet payout.

Software tables versus live dealers

RNG blackjack is dealt by software, plays quickly and usually has the lowest minimum bets. Live dealer blackjack streams a real dealer and shoe from a studio; seats can fill up, and some versions let unlimited players bet on the same hand. Both are legitimate formats on regulated sites; the rules panel, not the format, decides the house edge. Our live casino guide explains how live tables work on Ontario and crown sites.

Real-money blackjack: which sites are authorized

Where you can play online blackjack for real money depends on the province you are in. Ontario players can use OLG.ca or a private casino listed by iGaming Ontario; see our Ontario page for how the system works. Alberta has Play Alberta and, since 13 July 2026, a private market. PlayNow serves British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Loto-Quebec runs the online casino in Quebec, and Atlantic Lottery covers the Atlantic provinces.

Offshore sites also deal blackjack to Canadians, typically under a Kahnawake, Malta, Curacao or Anjouan licence. No province licenses them, so if a dispute over a hand or a withdrawal comes up, provincial regulators cannot help.

Practising with free blackjack games

Free black jack online games, including the “247 black jack” style sites, deal hands with play chips. They are a good way to practise basic strategy until the decisions are automatic. Practise against the same rules you will play for money: a free game with a 3 to 2 payout teaches the right habits, while one with odd rules can teach the wrong ones. Free chips cannot be withdrawn. When you move to real-money tables, bonus terms matter: many casinos count blackjack at a reduced rate toward wagering, so check the bonus terms before you opt in.

Bankroll and age rules for blackjack

A low house edge still means you lose over time; it just happens more slowly. Size your bets so that a bad run of 20 or 30 hands does not empty your budget, set a deposit limit in your account and stop at a time you chose in advance. Online casino play is limited to adults: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). For helplines and self-exclusion, see our responsible gambling page.

Questions readers ask

What is the house edge in blackjack?

With basic strategy, about 0.28% under liberal Las Vegas Strip rules and 0.43% under Atlantic City rules, per the Wizard of Odds. Worse rules, such as a 6 to 5 payout for blackjack, raise it.

Can I count cards in online blackjack?

RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, so counting does not work. Live dealer tables may use continuous shufflers or deep cut cards, which limit any benefit.

Should I take insurance in blackjack?

Basic strategy says no. Insurance is a side bet on the dealer having blackjack and carries a higher house edge than the main game.

Which sites can deal blackjack legally to Canadians?

Yes, on your provincial crown site and, in Ontario and Alberta, on private sites registered with the AGCO or AGLC. Offshore sites accept Canadians but are not licensed by any province.
