"Offshore access" means the site accepts players there without a provincial licence: provincial rules and complaint routes do not cover it.

In British Columbia, the B.C. government names one legal online gambling site: PlayNow, run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC). The same platform serves Manitoba through Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, and Saskatchewan, where SaskGaming manages it and SIGA operates it. This PlayNow review covers whether the site is legit, what it sells, how withdrawals and promotions work, and where the app stands.

A crown site works differently from a private brand. In B.C. the operator is a public body, so you get provincial rules, a provincial complaint route and provincial self-exclusion. Offshore brands cannot offer that. The trade-off, from what we could find, is a much quieter bonus scene than in Ontario’s private market.

Who owns and regulates PlayNow

The short answer to “is PlayNow legit” is yes. The site is owned and operated by BCLC, a crown corporation of British Columbia, and has been online since 2004. Under the Criminal Code, s. 207, only a province or its agent may conduct and manage online casino games, lottery and sports betting, and in B.C. that agent is BCLC. The B.C. government describes PlayNow as the only legal online gambling site in the province.

The regulator line we hold on file reads: BCLC (British Columbia Lottery Corporation); offered with Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries and SIGA. In practice the three versions of the site sit under three different provincial arrangements:

  • British Columbia: BCLC runs the site directly. You must be a B.C. resident, physically in B.C. and 19 or older.
  • Manitoba: Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries offers PlayNow on the BCLC platform under a service contract, live since January 2013. The age in Manitoba is 18.
  • Saskatchewan: PlayNow launched on 3 November 2022, managed by SaskGaming, operated by SIGA and regulated by SLGA, again on BCLC’s platform. The age is 19.

The general rule across Canada is 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). For the full legal picture in each province, see our pages on gambling in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

What PlayNow offers: casino, poker, bingo, sports and BC Lotto

Public sources confirm five product lines in British Columbia: lottery, an online casino (added in 2010), poker (2011), sports betting and bingo. Manitoba’s version lists the same five. For Saskatchewan, the provincial sources we used confirm casino and sports betting; other products there were not confirmed on an official page.

PlayNow casino

We could not load the casino lobby, because the site refused our research requests. That means we do not list game counts, studios or the table games on offer, and we do not say whether a live dealer section is available in your province. Searches for “PlayNow online casino” and “PlayNow mobile casino” lead to the same lobby; there is no separate casino brand. If you mainly play blackjack, our blackjack guide explains the rules and house edge that apply on any regulated table.

PlayNow poker

PlayNow poker has run since 2011. According to industry reports, the crown poker rooms of PlayNow and Loto-Quebec’s Espacejeux share a player pool. Sources disagree on the dates and on whether Saskatchewan players sit in the same pool, so treat that detail as reported, not confirmed. The PlayNow poker app question is covered on our app page.

PlayNow bingo

BCLC lists several online bingo rooms, among them Suite 75, Coast to Coast, Stardust and Moonlight Diamonds. According to the room rules, numbers are daubed automatically unless you switch to manual, games run until a Full Card win, and a draw needs at least two players or it is cancelled and refunded. The B.C. rooms are for players located in B.C.; Manitoba has its own version.

PlayNow Sports

PlayNow Sports is the crown sportsbook. Since the federal change of 27 August 2021 it can offer single-event bets. Its game conditions are published as a PDF on the site; we did not confirm the current list of leagues and markets.

BC Lotto online

Many people search “BC Lotto” when they mean PlayNow: it is where BCLC sells lottery tickets online, including the national draws Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49. Our lottery section carries the latest official results, but always check a ticket with the lottery corporation’s own tools.

Cashier gaps: PlayNow withdrawal and deposit data

Payments are the area where we have the least confirmed data, because the cashier pages could not be fetched. Here is what the record holds, with empty cells meaning we could not confirm a value:

Item Value on file
Payment methods not stated
Interac not stated
Minimum deposit not stated
Withdrawal time not stated

For a PlayNow withdrawal, the governing document is BCLC’s player agreement, which you should read for the cash-out rules that apply to your account. Residence and age are checked when you register, since only adult residents of the province may play. If a payout is held, ask BCLC’s customer support for the reason in writing; as a crown operator it answers to the provincial government, not to an offshore licensing body.

PlayNow sign up and the residence rule

Sign up is limited to residents of the province whose version you join. In B.C. you must also be physically in the province to play, so a B.C. account cannot be used for wagering from Alberta or Ontario. Expect to give your name, date of birth and address. We do not explain workarounds for the location rule.

If you live elsewhere, the matching crown site is different: Play Alberta in Alberta, OLG in Ontario, Espacejeux in Quebec and Atlantic Lottery in the four Atlantic provinces.

PlayNow bonus, free spins and promo codes

Crown sites do run promotions. We found no large welcome package of the kind offshore casinos advertise, though, and searches for “PlayNow no deposit bonus” or “PlayNow free spins” mostly find third-party pages that do not reflect the site. The current offer we hold on file: not stated. The current code, if any: not stated.

Our PlayNow promo code page explains how to find the offers that are live in your account and how to read their terms. We never print a code we have not seen on the operator’s own pages.

Does PlayNow have sister sites?

Not in the usual sense. No private group with several casino brands stands behind it. Its relatives are other provincial platforms. The Manitoba and Saskatchewan versions run on the same BCLC technology, and the poker room reportedly shares players with Espacejeux in Quebec. If you want to compare private brands that share an owner, our sister sites guide covers how groups in Ontario are organised.

Self-exclusion and help lines for PlayNow players

A crown site scores well on protection in our method. In B.C., the Game Break self-exclusion programme covers PlayNow and the BC Lotto app, and complaints go to a public corporation rather than to a private company abroad. Our scorecard reflects that: 82/100 out of 100, verdict Recommended.

Help lines verified by our researchers: in B.C., Gambling Support BC at 1-888-795-6111, 24/7; in Manitoba, the Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-463-1554; in Saskatchewan, the Problem Gambling Help Line at 1-800-306-6789. Our responsible gambling page lists support in other provinces.

Our view of PlayNow in Canada

In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, PlayNow is the provincially run site and the regulated choice. Legal certainty and protection tools count in its favour. What holds the score back is how little public data we could confirm on payout times and the cashier. Searches for “PlayNow Canada” sometimes come from people elsewhere in the country, and the honest answer is that they need their own province’s site.

Questions readers ask

Is PlayNow a legal site or a third-party casino?

It is legal and public. PlayNow is owned and operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, a crown corporation, and the B.C. government calls it the only legal online gambling site in the province. Manitoba and Saskatchewan offer it through their own provincial bodies.

Can I use PlayNow outside British Columbia?

Only in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, through their own versions of the site, and only while you are physically in that province. Players in other provinces need their own crown site or, in Ontario and Alberta, a provincially registered private operator.

How old do you have to be to play on PlayNow?

You must be 19 in British Columbia and Saskatchewan and 18 in Manitoba, per the provincial rules our researchers checked.

Does PlayNow have poker and bingo?

Yes. PlayNow has offered online poker since 2011 and runs several bingo rooms. Industry reports say its poker pool is shared with Loto-Quebec, but the details vary between sources.

What is the PlayNow payout time?

We could not confirm a published payout time. Any value we hold appears in the payments table on this page; otherwise check the cashier section of your account and BCLC's player agreement.

Scores and verdicts follow our published scoring rules. We earn a commission from some operators; it never changes a score. Facts come from operators' own pages and regulators' registries; we do not open accounts or make deposits. 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Help and limits.
