Baccarat is a card game where you bet on which of two hands, Banker or Player, will finish closer to nine, or on a tie. You make no decisions after the bet, so the only choice that matters is which bet you pick: Banker carries a house edge of 1.06%, Player 1.24% and Tie 14.36%, according to the Wizard of Odds. You can play it for real money on your provincial crown site and, in Ontario and Alberta, on registered private casinos.
How the baccarat card game works
Each round deals two cards to the Player hand and two to the Banker hand. Tens and picture cards count zero, aces count one and other cards count their face value; only the last digit of the total counts, so 7 plus 8 makes 5, not 15. A two-card total of 8 or 9 is a “natural” and ends the round. Otherwise a fixed drawing rule, the tableau, decides whether each hand takes a third card. Neither you nor the dealer chooses anything.
The names are historical: “Banker” and “Player” are just the two hands on the table, and you can bet on either. Player pays even money. Banker also pays even money minus a commission, traditionally 5%, because the drawing rules favour the Banker hand slightly. Tie usually pays 8 to 1. Many tables add side bets such as Player Pair or Banker Pair.
Baccarat odds and house edge by bet
| Bet | Usual payout | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1 to 1 less commission | 1.06% |
| Player | 1 to 1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8 to 1 | 14.36% |
The Tie figure assumes the 8 to 1 payout shown above; the source does not state the number of decks. The gap is the point: the Tie bet costs more than ten times as much per dollar as Banker or Player. Some “no commission” baccarat tables drop the 5% charge but reduce the payout on certain Banker wins instead, so read the rules panel to see what replaced the commission. On a baccarat RTP basis, Banker returns about 98.94% and Player about 98.76% over the long run.
Baccarat scoreboards and patterns
Live baccarat tables show a scoreboard, often several “roads” (Big Road, Bead Plate and derived roads) that record past results. They are a record, not a forecast. Each round is dealt from the shoe under fixed rules, and a streak of Banker wins does not make Player more likely next time. Players enjoy following the baccarat scoreboard, and that is fine as long as you do not raise stakes because a pattern looks due. Software that claims to predict the next hand from the roads does not work.
Speed, squeeze and live baccarat
RNG baccarat is dealt by software, plays fast and has low minimums. Live baccarat online streams real cards from a studio with a dealer; variants include speed baccarat with shorter betting windows, squeeze baccarat where the dealer reveals cards slowly, and versions with random multipliers such as Lightning Baccarat, whose payouts differ from the standard game. The house edges in the table above apply to the standard version only. Our live casino guide covers which regulated sites run live tables.
Regulated baccarat tables by province
Online baccarat in Canada is offered by the crown site in your province and, in Ontario and Alberta, by private operators. In Ontario that means OLG.ca or a brand on the iGaming Ontario list, for players 19+ who are physically in the province. Alberta adds Play Alberta and the private sites registered with the AGLC since 13 July 2026. PlayNow covers British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan; Loto-Quebec covers Quebec; Atlantic Lottery covers New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Our casino rankings sort regulated sites first.

Crypto baccarat and many “best baccarat online casino” lists point to offshore sites. Those operators may hold a Curacao, Anjouan or Kahnawake licence, but none is licensed by a province, and regulated provincial sites take Canadian dollars.
Practice play: free baccarat
Free baccarat online lets you watch the drawing rules in action without staking money, which helps if the third-card rule feels opaque. Since you make no decisions, practice will not improve your results; what it does show is how often ties appear and how quickly side bets drain a balance. Play credits in free games cannot be withdrawn.
Other things called baccarat
Some searches for “baccarat company” are about Baccarat, the French crystal maker, which has no link to the card game beyond the name. The “wizardofodds baccarat” searches lead to the maths reference we cite on this page; it is a useful place to check any odds claim you see elsewhere.
Limits, age and budgeting at the baccarat table
Baccarat is quick, especially speed tables, and that pace can turn a low house edge into large losses over an evening. Stick to Banker or Player, set a deposit limit and a loss limit before you start, and leave the table when you reach either. Online casino play in Canada is for adults: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Free helplines for each province are on our responsible gambling page.

Questions readers ask
- What is the best bet in baccarat?
Banker, with a house edge of 1.06% even after the commission. Player is close at 1.24%. Tie is the worst at 14.36% with an 8 to 1 payout.
- Can the baccarat scoreboard predict the next hand?
No. The roads record past results only. Each hand follows fixed drawing rules from the shoe, and past streaks do not change the next outcome.
- Is there any skill in baccarat?
Only in choosing your bet and managing your budget. The drawing rules are fixed and neither you nor the dealer makes decisions during the hand.
- Is real-money baccarat available on regulated Canadian sites?
Yes, on your provincial crown site or, in Ontario and Alberta, on a registered private casino. Offshore sites are not licensed by any province.
- Why does the Banker bet charge commission?
The drawing rules give the Banker hand a slight edge, so a commission, traditionally 5% of winnings, keeps the house ahead on that bet.
