Live dealer tables are filmed in a studio and streamed to your screen, and you place bets through an on-screen panel while a real person deals or spins. In Canada the best live casino options are the provincially licensed ones: BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings and other operators registered with the AGCO in Ontario or the AGLC in Alberta, OLG.ca in Ontario, and the crown sites PlayNow, Espacejeux and Atlantic Lottery elsewhere. The ranking comes first, then what the live format does and does not change about the odds.

Our live dealer shortlist

Our ranking uses the same score as every other casino page, then keeps only sites that offer casino games. OLG’s own description of OLG.ca includes online and live casino. For private operators, the live lobby is part of the casino product, but table lists and limits change, so check the lobby once you are logged in.

How a live dealer game works

A camera crew films a dealer at a physical table. Your bet is placed in a betting window that opens for a set number of seconds; when it closes, the dealer deals or spins and optical recognition reads the result. Payouts settle to your balance automatically. You are playing against the house, not the dealer, and other players at the same table do not change your odds in blackjack unless you choose to bet behind them.

Because each round takes real time, a live table plays far fewer hands per hour than an RNG version of the same game. That is the main practical difference for your budget: a slower pace means a lower expected loss per hour at the same stake.

Live roulette, blackjack and baccarat: the house edge

The rules on the table matter more than the stream. Reference figures from the Wizard of Odds:

Game and bet House edge
Single-zero roulette 2.70%
Double-zero roulette 5.26%
French roulette, la partage on even-money bets 1.35%
Blackjack, basic strategy, liberal rules 0.28%
Blackjack, basic strategy, Atlantic City rules 0.43%
Baccarat, Banker 1.06%
Baccarat, Player 1.24%
Baccarat, Tie (8 to 1) 14.36%

For live dealer blackjack, read the table’s rules panel: how many decks, whether the dealer hits soft 17 and what blackjack pays. For roulette, choose a single-zero wheel. Our blackjack guide and roulette guide go through the rule variations.

Game shows and other live formats

Live game shows mix a presenter, a money wheel and bonus rounds. Evolution launched Crazy Time in July 2020, built on its Dream Catcher wheel with four bonus games. Each spot on the wheel carries its own return, published in the game’s help panel, and the edge is usually higher than on a single-zero roulette wheel. The game shows page covers how they pay.

Live casino bonuses: read the contribution table

Many casino bonuses count live dealer bets at a reduced rate toward wagering, or not at all. A deposit bonus that looks generous may be close to useless if you only play live baccarat. Ontario sites are not allowed to advertise bonuses publicly, so you see the offer and its conditions only on the operator’s own site after you opt in. Look for the game contribution table before you accept.

Live dealer casino in Canada: provincial differences

Where you live decides which live tables you can legally join. In Ontario and Alberta you can choose among several registered operators, so the lobby and limits are worth comparing. In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, PlayNow is the provincially licensed option; in Quebec, Loto-Quebec’s online casino; in the Atlantic provinces, Atlantic Lottery where its online casino is offered. Offshore sites streaming the same studio games are not licensed by any province, even when the dealers and tables look identical. Our provinces page sets out the options.

What to check before you sit down

  • The licence: an Ontario or Alberta registration, or a crown site in your province.
  • Table limits: the minimum and maximum bet appear on each table’s info panel.
  • The rules panel: deck count, payouts and side bet returns.
  • Connection: a dropped stream on mobile usually settles the round per the operator’s rules, so read them.
  • Your limits: set a deposit limit in the account before your first session.

Live tables are for adults only: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). If play stops being fun, our support and self-exclusion page lists who to call in each province.

Questions readers ask

What is the best live casino in Canada?

In Ontario and Alberta the highest-scoring live casino options are BetMGM, FanDuel and DraftKings, with OLG.ca as the Ontario crown choice. In other provinces the crown site, such as PlayNow or Espacejeux, is the only provincially licensed option.

Is live dealer blackjack rigged?

At a licensed site the cards are real and the game is supervised under the regulator's standards. The house still has an edge, about 0.3% to 0.5% with basic strategy depending on the rules, so losses over time are expected.

Can I play live casino on my phone?

Yes. Most licensed operators stream live tables in their apps and mobile sites. A stable connection matters because each round has a betting window.

Do live casino games count toward bonus wagering?

Often only partly or not at all. Check the bonus game contribution table on the operator's site before you opt in.
