Play Alberta App

How to check a Play Alberta app listing before you install, why play only works inside Alberta and how to spot copycat apps.

Play Alberta App

Part of our Play Alberta report: 79 Acceptable Provincial site

Searching the official app store on your phone for “Play Alberta” is the safest way to find the app, and the publisher shown on the listing should be AGLC (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis). We could not confirm the current App Store and Google Play listings from an official source, so this page does not describe ratings or version history. Whatever the listing says, play only works for adults who are physically in Alberta.

Below we cover how to check a listing before you install, how the location rule affects mobile play and how to avoid copies. For the site behind the app, read our Play Alberta review.

What to expect from the Play Alberta app

According to AGLC, Play Alberta offers casino games, live dealer tables, instant games, lottery and a sportsbook with single-event wagering. We have not confirmed which of these the mobile app carries today, because the Play Alberta site refused our research requests. The store description and screenshots are the quickest way to see what the current version includes.

On regulated sites the account belongs to you rather than to the device: the same login normally works on the website and in the app, and limits are set on the account. Play Alberta’s help pages are the place to confirm that its limits work this way.

Store status as recorded in our data: Android not stated, iOS not stated. These fields stay empty until we confirm a listing. Ratings and version numbers change often, so we do not quote them.

Checking a listing before you install

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone or iPad) or Google Play (Android) on your device. Use the official store, not a download link from an ad or a message.
  2. Search for “Play Alberta”.
  3. Open the listing and read the developer or publisher name. It should be AGLC (Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission).
  4. Install the app and open it. Allow location access when asked; a regulated app needs it to confirm you are in Alberta.
  5. Log in with your existing Play Alberta account or register. AGLC says registration requires ID verification and that you are 18 or older.
  6. Before your first deposit, look in the account settings for deposit or loss limits and set them if you want them.

If the store does not show the app, check that your store account is set to Canada, since listings can differ by country. If it still does not appear, the Play Alberta website is the place to check whether an app is offered at all.

Why the app needs to know where you are

Play Alberta is offered in one province only. AGLC states that you must be physically in Alberta to play, and regulated apps check your location before accepting a wager. On a trip to British Columbia or Saskatchewan you may still be able to open the app, but play stays blocked until you are back in Alberta. That is how provincial law works, and we do not give advice on getting around location checks.

Each province runs its own system. In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan the provincial site is PlayNow; in Ontario it is OLG, alongside the private operators registered with the AGCO. Since 13 July 2026, private operators registered with AGLC can also offer games in Alberta, so other regulated apps may appear in the store as well.

Spotting a copycat app

Well-known names attract imitations, and a copy can look convincing, with the same logo and similar screenshots. A few checks help:

  • The publisher must be AGLC. Any other developer name is a red flag.
  • A genuine provincial app does not ask you to pay outside your account, for example by sending a crypto transfer or buying a gift card.
  • Offers that look much larger than anything on the website are a warning sign.
  • Ignore download links sent by message or posted in comments. Go to the store and search yourself.

If you think you installed a fake app, delete it, change your Play Alberta password and contact Play Alberta support through the official website.

Playing responsibly on your phone

A phone makes gambling available at any hour, which is why limits matter more in an app than on a desktop. Set a deposit limit before you play, and take a break if you notice you are opening the app out of habit. Gambling is for adults only: 19+ in most provinces (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Alberta’s Addiction Helpline, 1-866-332-2322, is free and open 24/7. More tools are on our responsible gambling page.

Questions readers ask

Is there an official Play Alberta app?

Search your phone's official app store and check that the publisher is AGLC. We could not confirm the current listings from an official source, so we do not link to one.

Why does the Play Alberta app ask for my location?

Play Alberta is offered in Alberta only, and AGLC requires you to be physically in the province to play. The location check is a legal requirement, not a glitch.

What can I play in the Play Alberta app?

AGLC lists casino games, live dealer, instant games, lottery and sports betting for Play Alberta. We have not confirmed which of them the current app version includes; the store description shows it.

Do I need a separate account for the app?

Regulated sites normally use one account on the web and in the app. Check Play Alberta's help pages before registering a second time.

Scores and verdicts follow our published scoring rules. We earn a commission from some operators; it never changes a score. Facts come from operators' own pages and regulators' registries; we do not open accounts or make deposits. 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Help and limits.
