“Free spins” covers three different things in Canadian searches: promotional spins a casino gives you, the free spins feature built into many slots, and daily spin-wheel promotions. All are rounds on a slot played without staking your own balance. Casino free spins offered as a bonus carry terms, typically a fixed stake, a named slot, expiry and often wagering on winnings. The in-game feature is part of the slot’s design and has none of that.
Ontario-registered sites may present spin offers only on their own site and to players who opted in. Most free spins deposit bonus offers seen in public therefore come from offshore casinos.
Promotional free spins: the four common types
- Deposit free spins: spins added when you pay in, alone or with a match bonus. The most common type; winnings are usually bonus money with wagering.
- No deposit spins: spins for registering, mostly offshore, with caps. Covered on our free spins no deposit page.
- No wagering spins: winnings paid as cash. See no wagering free spins.
- Reload and loyalty spins: spins for existing players, often weekly, sent through your account or opted-in email.
Offshore welcome packages often bundle spins with a match; Verde Casino’s homepage, for instance, shows Up to EUR 1,200 + 220 free spins over the first deposits (first deposit: 120% up to EUR 300 + 50 free spins). Verde names no licence or company on its homepage, and third-party pages name a Curacao licence; no province licenses it.
What makes a free spins casino offer worth claiming
Four numbers set the value of any spin offer:
- Spin value. 100 spins at $0.10 is $10 of play; 20 spins at $0.50 is the same $10.
- Slot RTP. The published return of the named slot. On $10 of spins, a 96% slot returns about $9.60 on average, a 94% slot about $9.40.
- Wagering on winnings. At 35x, $9.60 of winnings needs $336 of bets, with an expected loss of about $13 at 96%. Those are our own figures, and they show why wagered spins often end with nothing.
- Cap and expiry. A cap limits the best case; expiry limits the time you have.
No Canadian rule sets a wagering limit, so the multiple varies widely from site to site. Our bonuses overview compares this with the UK cap.
The free spins feature inside slots
Searches such as “free slots with bonus and free spins” usually mean the bonus round built into a slot: land enough scatter symbols and the game awards a number of spins, often with multipliers or extra wilds. This feature is part of the slot’s maths and published RTP. It is not a casino promotion and has no wagering. Studios publish how their features work; our slots guides describe them from the studio’s own information. Many studios offer an official demo on their own site, which lets you see the feature with play money; we do not embed demos.
Spin wheels and daily free spin games
A free spin wheel is a promotion where you spin a prize wheel, often daily, for spins, bonus money or loyalty points. The prizes carry the same terms as other bonuses. Social casino apps run similar wheels for virtual coins that cannot be cashed out, which is a different product from a real-money casino.
Spin offers at registered and crown sites
Standard 2.05 of the AGCO’s Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming bars public advertising of inducements, bonuses and credits. A registered Ontario casino can show you spins only on its own site and through marketing you consented to there. Standard 2.06 says an offer may not be called free unless it is actually free, and its material conditions must be shown when it is first presented. So when an Ontario site shows spins, check the terms link next to the offer.
Outside Ontario, the crown sites (PlayNow in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Loto-Quebec’s online casino, Atlantic Lottery and PlayAlberta) set their own promotions, and we have not confirmed a standing spin programme at any of them. Alberta’s private market, open since 13 July 2026, adds registered operators whose offers you read on their own sites. Online casino free spins advertised to the rest of Canada on public pages are, in most cases, offshore offers.

$1 deposit free spins and low-deposit offers
Offers such as “100 free spins for $1” are low-deposit promotions mostly run by offshore sites. The $1 is a real deposit, so the offer cannot honestly be called free in Ontario’s terms, and the spins usually carry wagering. Check whether a low first deposit also locks you into a minimum for later stages of the package. Our low deposit casinos page covers minimum deposits by site.
Spins and your budget
Spins are a cheap way to see a slot, not a plan for winning. Online casino play is 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). If a stream of spin offers keeps pulling you back, set limits in your account and see our responsible gambling page.
Questions readers ask
- When are casino free spins actually free?
Only when no deposit or own-money play is required and winnings are paid as cash. Most spin offers need a deposit or carry wagering on winnings. In Ontario, Standard 2.06 bars calling an offer free when it is not.
- What is the difference between free spins and a slot's bonus round?
Promotional free spins are a casino offer with terms. A bonus round is a feature built into the slot, triggered by symbols during normal play, with no wagering attached.
- Do free spins have a fixed stake?
Yes, almost always. The operator sets the value of each spin, usually the slot's minimum bet, and names the eligible slot or a short list.
- Do free spins winnings count as real money?
Only on no wagering offers. Otherwise winnings are bonus money until you meet the wagering requirement, and a cap may apply.
