Megaways slots are games where the number of symbols on each reel changes on every spin, so the number of ways to win changes too, often into the thousands. Eye of Horus Megaways from Blueprint Gaming, for example, uses six reels with two to five symbols each and reaches up to 15,625 ways. In Canada, Megaways games are offered legally by crown sites and by casinos registered in Ontario and Alberta; the mechanic itself does not change the house edge, but it does make results swing more.

How Megaways slots count their ways

A classic five-reel slot pays along fixed paylines. A Megaways game instead pays for matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, in any row position, and every reel shows a random number of symbols on each spin. The number of ways is the number of symbols on each reel multiplied together. If six reels land showing 2, 3, 4, 5, 3 and 2 symbols, that spin has 2 x 3 x 4 x 5 x 3 x 2 = 720 ways. If all six reels land on five symbols, it has 5 to the power of 6, or 15,625 ways, which is the maximum for Eye of Horus Megaways.

Many familiar titles now have a Megaways edition alongside the original, usually with a different RTP and max win, so treat the two as separate games.

The original Eye of Horus, a 10-payline game, lists a 96.31% RTP and a 500x max win. The Megaways edition trades some RTP for a much higher ceiling, a pattern you will see across many Megaways remakes. Our page on Eye of Horus Megaways covers the game in more detail.

Popular Megaways titles Canadians search for

Searches include Buffalo King Megaways, 5 Lions Megaways, Gonzo’s Quest Megaways, Madame Destiny Megaways, Bonanza Megaways, Rick and Morty Megaways, Temple Tumble Megaways, Twin Spin Megaways and 88 Fortunes Megaways. We have not verified the RTP, volatility or max win of these titles against the studios’ own pages, so we do not list figures for them here. Before you play any of them, open the info screen: it shows the RTP version the casino runs, which can be lower than the studio’s top setting.

Why Megaways games swing harder

More ways to win does not mean more money back. The RTP is what decides the long-run return, and the number of ways is just how the game spreads that return across spins. Most Megaways slots pair the changing reels with cascades (winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in) and free spins with growing multipliers. That combination tends to produce long runs of small or no wins punctuated by large ones, which is what “high volatility” means. If you prefer steadier play, a low-volatility classic such as Starburst behaves very differently. Our guide on slot odds and volatility explains how to size bets for each type.

Regulated casinos with Megaways lobbies

The regulated option depends on your province. Ontario players can use OLG.ca or a brand on the iGaming Ontario list, Albertans can use Play Alberta or a private site registered with the AGLC since July 2026, and PlayNow, Loto-Quebec and Atlantic Lottery serve the other provinces. The casinos below carry large slot lobbies; lobbies change, so search for the title you want after you log in. They are ranked by our score.

Offshore casinos often advertise the largest Megaways collections. They are not licensed by any province, so provincial dispute and self-exclusion schemes do not cover them.

Megaways and bonus terms

Free spins offers often name a specific slot, and Megaways titles are popular picks. Because these games are volatile, free spins on them produce very uneven results: many players end with little, a few with a lot. Some offers also exclude bonus-buy features or cap the maximum bet while wagering. Check the free spins terms before you opt in.

Bonus buy features

Many Megaways games offer a bonus buy, which lets you pay a multiple of your stake to go straight to the free spins round. It does not improve your odds; it concentrates your spending into fewer, bigger outcomes. Studio game sheets note that bonus buy is not available in every market, so it may be missing on a regulated Canadian site.

Staying in control with Megaways

Fast cascades and big multipliers make Megaways games among the most intense slots to play. Set a deposit limit, keep stakes small relative to your budget and expect long quiet stretches. Real-money slots in Canada are for adults: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Free provincial helplines are on our responsible gambling page.

Questions readers ask

What does Megaways mean in slots?

Each reel shows a random number of symbols on every spin, so the number of ways to win changes spin by spin. Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left.

Do Megaways slots pay more?

No. The RTP decides the long-run return. Megaways games usually have high volatility, so wins are less frequent but can be larger.

What is the RTP of Eye of Horus Megaways?

Blueprint Gaming's game sheet lists 95.49%, with high volatility and a max win of 10,000x the bet. Casinos may run a different version, so check the info screen.

Can I play Megaways games on a provincial site?

Yes, on your provincial crown site and on private casinos registered in Ontario or Alberta. Offshore sites that offer them are not licensed by any province.
