Scratch cards online are sold in Canada by the provincial lottery corporations, such as OLG in Ontario, and by regulated online casinos as instant win games. Each card’s result is set when you buy it, so there is nothing to work out as you scratch; what you can control is which game you pick, because the lottery corporations publish the odds and prize structure of every one. Read those odds before you play scratch cards online for real money.
How online scratch cards work
An online scratch card is the digital version of a scratch-off ticket. You choose a game and a price, the system draws the outcome, and the animation reveals symbols as you swipe or click. Some games reveal everything at once with an “auto” button. The reveal is cosmetic: by the time you see the card, the result is already decided. Prize tiers range from your stake back to a top prize, and most cards win nothing.
Crown lottery sites call these games INSTANT or instant win games. OLG, for example, requires an OLG.ca account to play INSTANT games online, and winnings go straight into that account. The OLG app also includes casino and instant games. Casino sites usually list scratch card games in their lobby next to slots, built by the same studios.
Odds and payouts: where to find them
Every OLG instant game has its own “odds and payouts” page. As one example, OLG lists the overall odds of winning a cash prize on INSTANT TOP UP at 1 in 10.23. That figure belongs to that one game; other games differ, so do not apply it across the board. Atlantic Lottery publishes a theoretical prize payout for its online Bingo instant win game: a $2 wager on four cards, 45 balls drawn, a top prize of $20,000 and a theoretical payout of 63%.
That 63% figure is worth pausing on. It means that, over the long run, the game is designed to return 63 cents of every dollar staked, a much lower return than most casino slots. Lottery instant games can pay back much less than casino games, so the price of a card says little about its value. Casino scratch cards built by slot studios usually publish an RTP in their info screen; compare it with the lottery figures before you choose.
| Where | What is published | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| OLG instant games | Overall odds and prize table per game | Each game’s odds and payouts page |
| Atlantic Lottery instant win | Theoretical prize payout per game | The game’s information page |
| Casino scratch cards | RTP set by the studio | The info or help screen inside the game |
Buying scratch cards online, province by province
Your province decides which sites are authorized. In Ontario, OLG.ca sells instant games online, and private casinos registered with the AGCO may list scratch-style games. British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan use PlayNow, Quebec uses Loto-Quebec, and Atlantic Lottery runs online instant win games in the Atlantic provinces. Alberta has the crown site Play Alberta, plus private casinos since 13 July 2026; check each lobby for instant games. Our lottery hub covers the draw games from the same corporations.

Free scratch cards and no deposit offers
Free scratch cards fall into two groups. Practice or demo games use credits with no cash value. “Free scratch cards win real money no deposit” offers are bonuses, and like any bonus they come with conditions: wagering, a cap on what you can withdraw, or a time limit. In Ontario, AGCO rules say an offer may only be called free if it really is free, and registered operators cannot advertise bonuses publicly. Many no-deposit scratch offers aimed at Canadians come from offshore sites that no province licenses. Our no deposit bonus guide explains how to read those terms.
Crypto scratch cards and offshore sites
Crypto scratch cards are an offshore product. Regulated provincial sites take Canadian dollars, while coin prices can move between your deposit and your withdrawal. If something goes wrong on an offshore site, no provincial regulator can take your complaint.
Is there a strategy for scratch cards?
No pattern, card position or time of day changes a scratch card result. The only meaningful choices are price and game: higher-priced cards often have larger top prizes, and the published odds tell you how often each prize tier pays. Ordering scratch cards online from unofficial resellers is a different matter: buy only from the lottery corporation’s own site or app, or from an authorized retailer, so a winning ticket can actually be claimed.
Playing scratch cards within limits
Instant games are quick, which makes repeat buying easy. Set a weekly budget in your lottery or casino account and treat each card as the cost of a moment of entertainment. Online play is for adults: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). Free support lines for each province are on our responsible gambling page.

Questions readers ask
- Can you win real money on online scratch cards?
Yes, on paid games from a lottery corporation or a regulated casino. Most cards win nothing, and the published odds show how often each prize tier pays. Free demo cards pay nothing.
- Where can I see the odds of an OLG scratch game?
Each OLG instant game has its own odds and payouts page. For example, OLG lists INSTANT TOP UP at 1 in 10.23 for any cash prize; other games differ.
- Are free scratch card offers really free?
Usually not. No-deposit offers carry conditions such as wagering or withdrawal caps. Ontario rules ban calling an offer free unless it is genuinely free.
- Is there a trick to picking a winning scratch card?
No. The result is set when the card is issued. The only useful choice is the game itself, based on its published odds and prize table.
