Every $3 Lotto 6/49 play enters two draws: the Classic Draw, where six numbers from 1 to 49 win or share a fixed $5 million, and the Gold Ball Draw, which pays either $1 million or the Gold Ball Jackpot. The winning numbers for the last ten Wednesday and Saturday draws are in the table further down, imported from the official results. For each draw the feed shows the six Classic numbers, the bonus number, the winning Gold Ball selection and whether a white ball or the gold ball came out of the drum. The numbers are imported from the official results, not entered by an editor, and the 649 results on the lottery corporation’s site win in any disagreement.

How a $3 Lotto 6/49 play works

The current format started with sales on Sunday 11 September 2022 and a first draw on Wednesday 14 September 2022. Each play has two parts:

  • A six-number Classic Draw selection from 1 to 49, which you pick or take as a Quick Pick.
  • A computer-generated 10-digit Gold Ball Draw number: eight digits plus a two-digit trailer, in the style 12345678-01.

Draws are held on Wednesday and Saturday. Sales close at 10:30 p.m. ET on draw day according to OLG and WCLC, with earlier cut-offs in some provinces. OLG, WCLC, Loto-Quebec and the corporations in British Columbia and Atlantic Canada sell the game in their regions; see our lottery results hub for the regional picture.

The Lotto 649 Gold Ball Draw explained

After the Classic Draw, one Gold Ball selection is drawn from all the selections issued for that draw. Then a ball is drawn from a drum that starts with 30 balls: 29 white and 1 gold.

  • A white ball means that selection wins $1 million. The white ball is not put back, so the drum shrinks by one ball each draw.
  • The gold ball means that selection wins the Gold Ball Jackpot. The jackpot starts at $10 million and grows by $2 million each draw until it is won, then resets to $10 million with all 30 balls back in the drum.

OLG says the Gold Ball Jackpot can reach up to $68 million, which matches the arithmetic: $10 million plus 29 increases of $2 million. Your odds of being the selection drawn are one in the number of Gold Ball selections issued for that draw, so they depend on sales and cannot be printed as a fixed figure. We do not show estimates of the current Gold Ball Jackpot; the lottery corporations publish that before each draw.

Classic Draw prizes and odds per $3 play

The table uses the official WCLC odds and prize shares. OLG lists the same odds, but its odds page still shows older pool shares that do not match the fixed $5 million top prize, so we use the WCLC figures.

Match Prize Odds
6 of 6 Win or share $5 million 1 in 13,983,816
5 of 6 + Bonus Share of 32.15% of Pools Fund 1 in 2,330,636
5 of 6 Share of 13.5% of Pools Fund 1 in 55,492
4 of 6 Share of 54.35% of Pools Fund 1 in 1,033
3 of 6 $10 1 in 56.7
2 of 6 + Bonus $5 1 in 81.2
2 of 6 Free Play 1 in 8.3

OLG puts the chance of any prize at 1 in 6.6 per $3 play. Note that the $5 million top prize is shared if more than one ticket matches all six numbers. Loto-Quebec results also show a separate “Super Draw” line for 6/49; we have not researched its rules and do not describe it here.

Which add-on comes with a 6/49 ticket

In Ontario you can add ENCORE for $1 a play: OLG’s seven-digit game with 22 ways to win and a $1,000,000 top prize. WCLC sells EXTRA for $1, with a $250,000 top prize, in the Prairies and the territories. Loto-Quebec sells its own EXTRA. The add-on and its prize table in British Columbia and Atlantic Canada were not confirmed by our research, so ask the retailer or check the provincial site.

Prize checks and payouts for 6/49

In Ontario, OLG’s Check Winning Numbers page and in-store ticket checkers confirm a result. In the WCLC region, the Lotto Spot app reads the “My Tickets” barcode, and retailers have self-checkers or can scan the ticket for you. Elsewhere, use your provincial lottery corporation’s results page or a retailer.

Small prizes are usually paid at the counter. OLG’s rules let stores pay under $1,000 depending on the store, with $50 always payable; larger amounts are claimed online. WCLC retailers pay up to $100 and may decline amounts up to $1,000; bigger prizes go through a WCLC prize office or by mail. A Gold Ball prize of $1 million or more follows the large-prize claim route of the corporation that sold the ticket.

We could not find a published claim deadline for Lotto 6/49 on the pages we checked. Claim periods are set by each corporation, so read the conditions for your region and do not wait.

Is a 6/49 prize taxable?

A Canadian lottery prize is not taxable income for a recreational player: the CRA says lottery winnings of any amount are not reported unless they are really employment, business or property income. Once you invest the money, the interest it earns is taxable. Read our guide to tax on winnings for the exceptions; it is not tax advice.

Setting a ticket budget for 6/49

Gambling in Canada is 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec) for most products; OLG states that lottery in Ontario is 18+. A $3 ticket is a small expense until it becomes a habit of several plays per draw. Keep a weekly limit and use the tools on our responsible gambling page if tickets stop being fun.

Questions readers ask

Which nights is Lotto 6/49 drawn, and when do sales stop?

Lotto 6/49 is drawn on Wednesday and Saturday. Ticket sales close at 10:30 p.m. ET on draw day, and some provinces stop earlier.

How does the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball work?

Every $3 play comes with a 10-digit Gold Ball number. One selection is drawn, then a ball from a drum of 29 white balls and 1 gold ball. White pays $1 million; gold pays the Gold Ball Jackpot, which starts at $10 million and grows by $2 million each draw.

What are the odds of winning the Lotto 6/49 Classic Draw?

Matching all six numbers has odds of 1 in 13,983,816 per $3 play. The chance of any prize is 1 in 6.6, most often a Free Play for two numbers.

Is the $5 million Classic prize shared?

Yes. The Classic Draw top prize is a fixed $5 million that is won or shared, so two winning tickets would split it.

How is a $1 million Gold Ball prize claimed?

It follows the large-prize route of the corporation that sold the ticket. OLG takes claims of $1,000 or more online and may mail a cheque or schedule an interview; WCLC pays $1,001 or more through a prize office or by mail.
