Online Poker in Canada

Poker hand rankings, how Texas Hold'em works, which online poker rooms are licensed in Canada and where the Ontario shared-liquidity case stands.

Online Poker in Canada

Canadians can play online poker legally on provincial sites. PlayNow and Loto-Quebec run crown poker rooms, and in Ontario private rooms such as BetMGM Poker, FanDuel Poker, 888 Poker and PartyPoker are registered and listed by iGaming Ontario. Unlike other casino games, poker is played against other people, and the site earns its money by taking a small fee from each pot or tournament entry rather than through a house edge. Ontario players can still only play against other people in Ontario; a court case on opening that pool is now before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Poker hands ranked from best to worst

Every standard poker game uses the same ranking of five-card hands. Learn this list first; it settles every showdown.

  1. Royal flush: A, K, Q, J, 10 of the same suit.
  2. Straight flush: five cards in sequence, same suit.
  3. Four of a kind: four cards of one rank.
  4. Full house: three of a kind plus a pair.
  5. Flush: five cards of the same suit, not in sequence.
  6. Straight: five cards in sequence, mixed suits.
  7. Three of a kind: three cards of one rank.
  8. Two pair: two different pairs.
  9. One pair: two cards of one rank.
  10. High card: none of the above; the highest card plays.

Suits never break a tie in standard poker. Two flushes are compared card by card from the top, and two identical hands split the pot.

How Texas Hold’em works

Texas Hold’em is the game most online poker rooms are built around. Each player gets two private cards, then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages: the flop (three cards), the turn and the river. There is a round of betting before the flop and after each stage. You make the best five-card hand from any combination of your two cards and the five on the board. Two forced bets, the small and big blinds, start the action on each hand. Omaha is the second most common game; you get four private cards and must use exactly two of them.

Who you play against and how the site gets paid

Because you play against other people, skill matters in poker over time in a way it does not in slots or roulette. The room takes rake, a small percentage of cash-game pots usually capped per hand, or an entry fee on tournaments. Rake differs by room and stake, so check the room’s fee page rather than relying on a general figure. The Canada Revenue Agency says skill-based poker played in a sufficiently organized, commercial way can be a business, which affects tax; our gambling tax guide explains the rule for recreational players.

Ontario’s player pool and the court case

Ontario online poker is ring-fenced: registered rooms may only seat players located in Ontario, so traffic is smaller than on international networks. The province asked the courts whether it could let Ontario players join games with players outside Canada. On 12 November 2025, the Ontario Court of Appeal ruled 4 to 1 that the proposed model would be lawful under section 207 of the Criminal Code, provided iGaming Ontario keeps conduct and management of the games. The Supreme Court of Canada heard the appeal on 7 October 2026 and reserved judgment, with no date for a decision. As of October 2026, shared international liquidity has not started.

Crown poker rooms outside Ontario

PlayNow lists poker among its products in British Columbia (industry reports also place Manitoba on the same platform), and Loto-Quebec runs a poker room for Quebec. According to industry reports, PlayNow and Loto-Quebec share a player pool, though sources disagree on dates and on whether Saskatchewan is part of it. Each room requires you to be physically in the province that runs it.

Offshore poker rooms also accept Canadians. WPT Global, for example, names a Tobique Gaming Commission licence and is not on the iGaming Ontario list; our WPT Global review covers what that means for players.

Free poker games, WSOP chips and video poker

Free poker games come in three forms. Play-money tables at real poker rooms let you learn the flow of Texas Hold’em online without risk. Social poker apps, including the WSOP World Series of Poker app with its free chips, sell or give away chips that cannot be cashed out. “Free poker machine games” and “poker machines” are a different thing: in Australia a poker machine is a slot machine, and video poker is a separate RNG game where you play one hand against a paytable. Our slots hub covers that side. Searches for a poker table, poker set or poker tablet are about home equipment, not online play.

Time, money and long poker sessions

Poker sessions run long, and tournaments can take hours, so set a time limit as well as a deposit limit. Only bring a bankroll you can afford to lose; even strong players have long losing stretches. Online poker in Canada is for adults: 19+ (18+ in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec). If you are worried about how much you play, our responsible gambling page lists free provincial support lines.

Questions readers ask

What beats what in poker?

From best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card.

Who licenses online poker rooms in Canada?

Yes, through provincial sites. PlayNow and Loto-Quebec run crown poker rooms, and Ontario has private rooms registered with the AGCO and listed by iGaming Ontario. Offshore rooms are not licensed by any province.

Can Ontario players play against the rest of the world?

Not yet. The Ontario Court of Appeal approved the model in November 2025, but the Supreme Court of Canada heard the appeal on 7 October 2026 and has reserved judgment. Ontario rooms remain Ontario-only.

Are poker winnings taxed in Canada?

For recreational players, generally no. The CRA says poker can be taxed when it is played in an organized, commercial way that amounts to a business.

Are WSOP free chips worth real money?

No. Chips in social poker apps cannot be withdrawn as cash, whether they are free or bought.
